World Steel Production and Prices

During the last 10 years, a small group of emerging economies in Asia have supported the growth in total global steel production. While India and South Korea have contributed, production from China overwhelmingly leads globally. Accounting for half of global steel production, analysts worldwide monitor China's monthly production figures closely for signs of economic strength but also to gauge forward pricing expectations based on global demand and the production response of competing mills overseas.Between 2004 and 2014, China increased its annual steel production almost three times to about 823 million tons. At that volume, China's steel output was five times more than all of Europe, nearly seven times more than North America, and nine times more than the United States.In 2014, due to the cool-down in the construction boom in China, low domestic demand for steel halted China's output growth. As a result, prices for steel and iron ore fell significantly worldwide and continued to decline through 2015.  Turn the page to 2016 and the Chinese steel industry continues to dominate industry headlines. Total monthly production figures have repeatedly hit record levels, floating between roughly 69.5 and 70.5 million metric tons, but with a note of caution on the sustainability of this production volume. Production accelerated this year on the heels of a slight recovery of global iron ore prices. In December 2015, the price per metric ton measured at Tianjin Port, China, reached its lowest level since prices began their historic climb in early 2008.China's total production of 401.1 million tons during the first half of 2016 was about 0.6 percent less than the 403.7 million tons it produced during the same period last year. In 2016 and 2017 China maintained the status of the leader of steel-producing nations. Annual production for China was 870.8 million metric tons of crude steel in 2017, an increase of 7.7% compared to 2016.    In 2018 the number of Chinese steel production continued to increase and reached the record-breaking 928.3 million metric tons per year.

What Makes the Steel Industry Tick? //hi.knoema.com/fwfzobe/what-makes-the-steel-industry-tick 2019-12-17T09:51:48Z Misha Gusev hi.knoema.com://hi.knoema.com/user/1000560
What Makes the Steel Industry Tick?

You know the scene. It opens every Middle School video on almost any material. A happy, smiling, foursquare family sits obliviously around the kitchen table enjoying breakfast or dinner. The announcer encourages us to imagine a world without the subject material... Then, in a flash, the material is removed from the scene and the family members all find themselves sitting on the floor, dazed and glum, with no utensils, no stove, no fridge, no pans, no light cord. They want their steel back.   It's a hackneyed snapshot of the value of steel to the nuclear consumer family and it's true. But steel is more important than that. Steel is the second most voluminously produced commodity after oil. In 2018, the world consumed some 1.6 billion tonnes, more than twice global consumption in the year 2000. Recent demand has been powered by the rapid expansion of China's economy, just as steel has been one of the foundation materials in the building of every industrial society. It was a product of the British Industrial Revolution in the late 18th Century and has powered the industrialization of every country since. Not only is contemporary life dependent on high quality steel products, but the entire configuration of an industrialized economy and its future development of products and infrastructure relies on it. The four factors discussed here are what makes the industry tick.

Production, Trade and Use of Steel across the World

Being first produced in 200 BC and first put on mass production in 1850s steel nowadays is arguably the most important material used in engineering and construction throughout the world. Being an alloy of iron and carbon, steel accounts for over 3500 various grades with different chemical, environmental and physical properties, 75% of which have been created in the past 2 decades. As of 2012, it was produced 1,560 million tons of crude steel in the World with China being an absolute leader accounting for about a half of world's crude steel production, according to the data provided by World Steel Association. Comparing to 2012, the number of crude steel production in the World grew to 1,690 million tons in 2017. China have strengthened the position of the absolute leader. Concerning international trade, Brazil is the biggest exporter of iron ore accounting for about one-fourth of the world's iron ore exports, while China is the biggest importer. These and other statistics on annual and monthly dynamics of production of wide variety of steel products from World Steel Association is available below. US Imports of Steel and Aluminium: Tariffs Perspective //hi.knoema.com/oomcmjc/us-imports-of-steel-and-aluminium-tariffs-perspective 2018-10-05T05:11:35Z Alex Kulikov hi.knoema.com://hi.knoema.com/user/1847910
US Imports of Steel and Aluminium: Tariffs Perspective

On March 8, 2018, US president Donald Trump issued two proclamations to adjust US imports of aluminum and steel from all countries except Canada and Mexico, key regional allies and trade partners. President Trump asserted that a 25 percent tariff on steel “articles” and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum articles are necessary for the US to develop its domestic steel and aluminum industries and to protect and create jobs. The US is the world's largest importer of the steel and aluminum articles covered by the proclamations. The import value of steel articles has declined twofold in the last two years, yet remains 32 percent greater than in 2009 and double the value in 2003. In contrast, the value of aluminum articles imported during the last three years has been increasing and is now twice the level in 2000 while remaining below the most recent peak in 2006.Canada and Mexico, which are exempted from the tariffs, constitute 32 percent of total US imports of steel and aluminum articles. China accounts for only 8 percent of US imports of the same steel and aluminum articles.According to the Global Trade Alert (GTA), the US implemented 47 percent of harmful interventions in the steel industry in the period since the start of the global financial crisis. China, however, has made more harmful interventions in the aluminum industry—about 5 percent of total events globally—than any other country, according to GTA. The US government will potentially collect $7.4 billion a year from the new tariffs, according to the definitions specified in the presidential proclamations and data from the United Nations Statistics Division.Imports of affected steel articles to the US constituted $23.5 billion in 2016, which was nearly half of all US iron and steel imports in 2016 and about 1 percent of total US merchandise imports that year.US imports of aluminum articles constituted less at about $15 billion in 2016, or approximately 80 percent of total US aluminum imports. The winners and losers among US trading partners vary based on the specific articles. Steel articles. The top 5 exporters of steel articles to the US are Canada, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Japan, and Brazil, however, article-by-article trade dynamics modify the impact of the tariffs. The largest categories of steel articles affected by the new tariffs are flat-rolled products, tubes, pipes, and hollow profiles of iron or non-alloy steel.Brazil is the largest exporter of semi-finished products of iron or non-alloy steel to the US. Aluminum articles. Canada is also among the top 5 exporters of aluminum articles to the US, joined by China, Russia, the UAE, and Mexico. The largest affected category among aluminum articles is unwrought aluminum.China is the largest exporter of aluminum plates, sheets, and strip to the US.
